LASU

Founded in 1983, Lagos State University is a public university in Nigeria, operating three main campuses namely Ojo, ikeja and Epe.Is the only state university in Lagos State, this University has over 35,000 full-time students enrolled in graduate, undergraduate and postgraduate level of education.

The OJo Campus is the main campus and the base of the central administration.

Lagos State University’s Epe Campus is a boarding campus housed in a former barracks and even larger than its main campus.

UNILAG

The University of Lagos was founded in 1962. The university currently has three campuses in Yaba and Surulere.

While two of its campuses are located in Yaba (main campus at Akoka and newly established campus at the old School of Radiology), its College of Medicine is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere.

It is astounding that all three campuses are located on the mainland of Lagos.

Its main campus is largely surrounded by Lagoon in 802 acres in Akoka, to the northeast of Yaba.

Based on the latest ranking 2023 University of Lagos UNILAG is ranked as the 6th best university in Nigeria and 1699 globally.

Admission Requirements and Selectivity

Admission Requirements for LASU

Below are the requirements for candidates who wish to gain admission into LASU(Undergraduates)

  1. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 credits in his/her O level result.
  2. Candidates must choose the correct JAMB subject combination for your course.
  3. Candidates must score at least 195 in the just concluded JAMB examination to be offered admission into Lagos State University.
  4. You must put LASU as your First Choice of Institution.
  5. You Must Participate in LASU POST UTME/SCREENING exercise to be considered for admission
  6. Candidates must have reached the age of 16 before the admission process

Note that Lasu uses Post Utme screening excersie as a means to admit students into various departments which means you’re just need your o level results and UTME result.

Based on Reports we found out that Lagos State University LASU considers their indigenes first before giving admission to non indegienes i.e they favour their indigenes than non indigenes for example of an indigene of Lagos state scores 245 in JAMB and a non indigene scores 250, the indigene will be picked ahead of the non indegiene in Lagos state university.

This is what many students have complained about the style of admission in Lagos state university.

So if you’re intending to attend Lago state university you will need to score extremely high in your UTME and have a very good o level result.

UNILAG

To gain admission into the University of Lagos perspective candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Candidates must have reached the age of 16 before admission process.
  2. Candidates must have at least 6 (six) Credits ” grades in their O’level result (s). This must include English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects related to their course of study. For instance, a Candidate that wants to study Medicine and Surgery must have a “Credit” in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  3. Candidates must score at least 200 in JAMB UTME examination.
  4. Candidates must take UNILAG post UTME examination and must perform very well in the examination.
  5. Anything more than ONE sitting results is not accepted for admission into the University of Lagos (UNILAG). So you must present only one O level result
  6. Candidates must choose the correct subject combination for their courses.
  7. Finally, candidates must meet the lay down cutoff marks for their courses to gain admission into the university.

NOTE that admission into the university of Lagos is very difficult you need to do extremely well in your JAMB and post utme.

ASUU STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was founded in 1978.

ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria are always in conflict over funding of the Nigerian Universities, better working conditions among others.

And each time the two parties call for a meeting to settle their disagreements, it usually ended with the government promising the union that the demands would be met soon.

The government’s refusal to meet the union’s demands since 1999 has however been the basic reason ASUU goes on strike almost every year.

Now that you know the meaning of ASUU and the role of ASUU in the Nigerian educational system, let’s check out which of these two universities are under ASUU.

Currently University of Lagos UNILAG is under ASUU which means anytime ASUU call on strike UNILAG will also go on strike.

But Lagos state university LASU is not under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
