What is Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship?

The Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship is a reputable program tailored for early-career Black women and gender-expansive people in the United States who are devoted to pursuing careers in environmental and climate justice. Named after the reputable environmental activist, Hazel M. Johnson, this fellowship intends to develop a new era of leaders who will steer favorable change in the field.

Fellowship Benefits

Chosen fellows will embark on a transformative trip through the following options:

  1. Internship Placement: Fellows will have the incalculable opportunity to embark on a 10-week internship at a leading environmental institution, acquiring hands-on knowledge and insights into the field.
  2. $5,000 Living/Wellness Stipend: Recognizing the economic obstacles encountered by many aspiring environmental experts, each fellow will get a stipend to fund their living expenditures during the internship duration.
  3. Professional Development Workshops: Weekly virtual workshops will provide fellows with crucial skills and proficiency to excel in their careers, surrounding topics such as leadership, advocacy, and project administration.
  4. End-of-Summer Retreat: The fellowship will culminate in an enriching retreat where fellows can connect with peers, mentors, and industry experts, fostering a supportive community of environmental leaders.

Who Can Apply?

  • Early career self-identified Black women or gender-expansive persons
  • Aspiring climate and environmental professionals, including rising juniors, rising seniors, recent graduates (up to 3 years out of undergrad), and first-year grad students (entering fall 2024)
  • Individuals with a passion for environmental or climate-focused work, regardless of academic background or formal training in the field
  • Applicants must be residing in the United States or a United States territory for the duration of the fellowship
