What is federal university
Federal Universities are tertiary level of institution that is funded and managed by the government at the federal level. This Universities are usually established by the National government of a country.
Federal universities are commonly found in countries that have a federal structure of government.
Examples of countries with federal universities include the United States, Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, Ghana , Switzerland e.t.c
What is a state university?
State Universities are Tertiary level of education institutions that is been established and managed by the state Government.
These universities are established and supported by the state in which they are located.
For example in Nigeria here every state has a university established by the state Government. These universities will be controlled and managed by the state Government of every nation.
Now we all know what federal and state university means now let’s get the comparison between the two. Please don’t miss any part of this content because it will be of help to you on the nearest Future.

Academic Reputation
In recent years federal institutions has more reputation than other types of tertiary level of institutions.
Federal Universities attract best students from all over the country which brings about academic diversity.
In federal tertiary institutions students from different part of the country are connected together to promote cultural and religion diversity.
In almost every country in the world federal Universities are ranked higher than State Universities.

In state universities academic excellence are high also but not to compare to federal Universities.
Almost every state universities in Nigeria expecially favour their indigenes in terms of admission than any other region this brings about bias in admission as many students will call it.
State universties as we all know are owned and managed by the state level of government Provide independent educational system which is not been hindered in any means by the federal government.
The state Government is responsible for taking decisions on its own.
Infrastructure and Facilities
Federal universities have a better infrastructure to facilitate learning than state universities.
But in recent times now State Universities are now more equiped in infrastructure and facilities especially in Nigeria where federal level of education has been abandoned.
State University maintain and builds new Infrastructure and Faculties almost every academic session but in federal Universities especially here in Nigeria infrastructure and Facilities are been neglected and outdated.
Cost of Education in Federal and State universities
Well, the truth to be told the cost of education in federal universities are far ahead cheaper than in state universities.
Students in Federal universities pay cheaper school fees than their counterparts in state universities.
In terms of tution fee an average federal university pay below ₦100,000 in Nigeria compared to that of state University.
State universities are known for their high school fees which makes the cost of education high there but as many people say that the standard of education there is high that’s why tution fees are much expensive but I will not agree to that.
However, it is important to note that at most federal universities, the tuition fees students pay vary by course and level of study.
A student studying Medicine and surgery may pay higher tution fees compared to that one studying Agricultural science in federal Universities.
Also Newly admitted students generally pay higher school fees than returning students in both federal and state universities.
Admission Style
Federal Universities have large student bodies, students from different parts of the country with different backgrounds and religious beliefs are enrolled. This allows intakes to learn the lifestyle, behavior and values of different people. More or less Students in Federal Universities become street smart and can adapt in almost any part of the country.
While state universities are known for taking their indigenes first before others which leads to population of a certain trybe in a university.
Admission into Federal Universities are very strict and difficult it’s considered for the best students while in state universities the admission is not as difficult as it is on federal universities.
Population
In terms of Population Federal Universities have larger population compared to State Universities this is because they admit more students into various departments and Faculties than state universities not only that federal universities have more applicants than state universities.
Strike Action
In Nigeria and few other African Countries Federal Universities are known for their Periodic academic strike and suspensions.
In Nigeria there’s a body called Academic Staff Union of Universities which govern federal universities staffs.
This body serves as a means of communication between the government and federal universities.
They are alot of times in which thier demands are not been met by the federal government and this will call for Strike action until there needs are been met but in State universities there is nothing like strike action.
State Universities in Nigeria ar known for stable academic calendar and curriculum which makes state universities better than Federal Universities in stability of academic programs.

Both State and Federal Universities offers various academic Programmes depending on what type of University you pick.
Some state university offer less academic programmes compared to federal Universities.

in Nigeria a perfect example of extracurricular activities in federal and state universities is NUGA( Nigerian University Games Association).
NUGA was established in 1966 at university of Ibadan (UI).
In 1966, the first Nigerian University Games was held at the university of Ibadan where five federal universities participated namely University of Nigeria, Nsuka, university of Lagos, Akoka Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Obafemi awolowo university and University of Ibadan were the game was hosted.
As of now they are over eighty(80) universities under NUGA including both Private, state and federal universities Both state and federal Universities are allowed to partake in the NUGA games .

State Universities are state owned tertiary institutions. This institutions are built and managed by the state level of government while federal Universities are universities established by the federal government of every nation. This Universities are developed and managed by the federal arm of government.
